LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV’s Department of Surgery has received a $666,667 grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety to advance its research into preventing traffic-related injuries and fatalities across Nevada.
The project, now in its 15th year and led by Dr. Deborah Kuhls, draws on data from the Nevada Statewide Trauma Registry to identify patterns in serious traffic-related injuries and develop evidence-based strategies for safer roadways.

This year, researchers will focus on the rising number of injuries involving e-bikes and e-scooters. The team is also analyzing injury severity, hospitalization rates and patient outcomes to build a picture of how e-bikes and e-scooters are affecting road safety statewide.
The team also encourages road users to familiarize themselves with local e-bike regulations, such as Clark County’s ordinance that took effect Oct. 1, 2025. The ordinance sets safety requirements covering speed limits, helmet use and where e-bikes may be operated.
