LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A woman is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly dragging a Las Vegas police officer with an SUV during a shoplifting incident.
The incident occurred just after 7 p.m. Friday at the Target location at 4100 Blue Diamond Road. According to a report, a loss prevention employee saw a group of individuals in the baby department hiding items in bags. He then called the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to report the shoplifting.
According to the arrest report, the employee told police he saw one female in the group walk outside to a white SUV, drop off items, and then return to the store. At one point, the suspects began paying for items at a self-checkout kiosk but did not pay for all of them.
An LVMPD officer arrived and attempted to stop one of the suspects, identified as Keneshia Dixon, 35, and another person as they exited the store, according to documents. The officer tried to detain Dixon, but she pulled away and ran to the vehicle. Ignoring verbal commands, they fled to the white SUV. A witness said she saw two younger girls, between 12 and 15 years old, yelling at the officer, saying, “Get off my mom! What is she getting arrested for? Stop!”
After a struggle, the officer became lodged inside the vehicle, with his legs hanging out the door. The witness said the officer was being punched by the suspect, noting that they were using “closed fists.” According to the arrest report, the officer was dragged partially inside the vehicle, traveling at speeds between 30 and 50 mph. A bystander who witnessed the incident told police she feared for the officer’s life when she saw his legs dangling from the car.
Other LVMPD officers arrived and saw the officer’s legs hanging from the moving vehicle as it traveled toward Blue Diamond Road, the report said. Officers attempted a precision immobilization technique, or PIT maneuver, and a police car bumped the SUV. The SUV was then struck by a box truck and crashed into landscaping at a bank.
Three of the four people were quickly detained, while Dixon fled on foot while wearing police handcuffs. Those three were only identified by their first names: Breshawna, Kanesha and Alyana. A short time later, Dixon was located and arrested near Blue Diamond Road and Arville Street.
The officer was taken to a local hospital and treated. Dixon was also treated for minor injuries and remained in custody. Police recovered more than 20 pieces of stolen baby clothing from the SUV, the report said.
Dixon was released from the Clark County Detention Center on Tuesday and ordered to stay out of trouble and away from the Target location. She faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including second-degree kidnapping, burglary of a business (first offense), resisting a public officer with a dangerous weapon (not a firearm), battery on a protected person, three counts of first-degree child abuse or neglect, and escape by a felony prisoner.
Dixon is due in court at 8:30 a.m. Monday.
