LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Two social media content creators settled a common travel debate by racing from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, one by car and one by plane, with $50,000 on the line.

Sami Khan drove a Lamborghini while Derek Anderson flew commercial from LAX for their YouTube competition show Cashtronaut, which tests real-world questions.

The race began outside a hotel in downtown Los Angeles on a Sunday evening. Khan drove off while Anderson took an Uber to the airport.

“We are going to be cutting it close,” Anderson said during the race.

Khan drove at or slightly above the speed limit but missed an exit to the highway to Las Vegas. Anderson faced a half-hour flight delay.

“I think this is a big part of the experiment was just the realization, you know, we all think it again when we’re going to the airport and you’re like, man, I could have been halfway there right now. Literally, I was more than halfway to Vegas before he even got on the plane,” Khan said.

Khan’s drive was about 39 minutes faster than Anderson’s flight, thanks in large part to the flight delay.

“I was delayed by half an hour. Otherwise, it would have been a much closer race,” Anderson said.

Both men agreed the outcome could be different depending on traffic on the road and the flight delays.

“We picked specifically LA to Vegas because so many people felt strongly one way or the other, but nobody could tell us this is a guarantee,” they said.

Gas for the Lamborghini costs about $80. The flight costs about $200.

The duo owns a gaming company called Atlas Earth. They covered the $50,000 bet with a donation to the Global Gaming League.

Khan and Anderson said they would return to test the race if Brightline’s planned high-speed train becomes operational. The train is expected to travel 200 mph and cut the journey to two hours.
