LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Following a viral TikTok trend, more cars are hitting the roads decked out in Christmas lights. But Nevada State Police said some of these lights could be illegal.

Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) 484D.145 says that vehicle cannot attach decorative lighting to their vehicles as it doesn’t comply with requirements for color, placement and function. The law states that vehicle lights must be amber in the front and red in the back, and any additional colors could be distracting to drivers.

NRS 484D.100 and 484D.110 also state that vehicles have to have proper lighting for operation, including two working headlamps. State Police said Christmas lights on your car are not considered a substitute.

“While we love your holiday enthusiasm, we want to keep everyone on Nevada’s roadways safe,” State Police said in a news release.
