HENDERSON (FOX5) — The family of 14-year-old Torrianne Mortensen, who was hit and killed while riding her e-scooter last week, says drivers need to do better.
Mortensen was hit by an SUV while riding through a marked crosswalk at Racetrack Road near Blue Lantern. Her family made the decision to take her off life support over the weekend.
Parents tracking location when notified
Maranda and Jacob Mortensen, Torri’s parents, said she was funny and lit up every room she walked into.
Maranda says they were tracking her location on the way home from school when she noticed it stop in the middle of a crosswalk. Growing worried, that’s when they received a phone call.
“He’s like, you better get down here,” Jacob Mortensen said. “We’re losing your daughter. We’re losing her right now. This was just a bystander helping out, and at that point, he FaceTimed me, and I saw my daughter at that site. There was a girl doing CPR on my daughter.”
“I’m just screaming, like, my daughter’s gone, my daughter’s gone. I was just so heartbroken at that time,” he said.
Crash at crosswalk
Henderson Police say several cars were stopped waiting for Mortensen at the crosswalk near Saguaro Park Trail when a Nissan SUV went around and struck her. The car stopped several feet away.
“We believe that upon impact, the blunt force impact on her brain took her away immediately,” Jacob said. “She had a heart attack. She didn’t have pulse.”
Torri’s parents said she was wearing a helmet and using the crosswalk, just as they’d taught her.
Concerns about speeding
A memorial is growing at the crosswalk, with a sign that says if you see this, you can see a person in the crosswalk.
Mortensen’s parents say living in the area, they’ve always had concerns about speed on the road.
“It’s typical for people to be going at least 40 to 45 miles per hour,” Maranda said. “There have been multiple times crossing this crosswalk where people don’t stop when there’s somebody crossing on the other side.”
Those are issues Fox 5 crews noticed while on scene, cars that sped through crosswalk signals.
“We need to slow down. We need to think about things. You know, there’s numerous kids driving by right now without helmets on and zooming through the streets. We’re watching it right now and we see it every day,” Jacob said.
Now, Torrianne’s family says she’s saving lives even in her loss, with the family donating her organs.
According to Henderson Police, driver Michael Stanton, 64, was arrested by citation for manslaughter, failure to exercise due care for a pedestrian, and overtaking a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk. He is due in court in January.
