LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Neighbors continue to speak out and fuel the debate over the future of the Sahara Events Center at the Historic Commercial Center.

In September, the Clark County Board of Commissioners approved $10 million for future investments into the Event Center in the southwest corner off Liberace Avenue. County officials said any proposed use or partnership still needs further approval from the Redevelopment Agency.

FOX5 told you about the proposed tenant for the Events Center: according to Commissioner Tick Segerblom, Insomniac, the entity behind the annual Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, plans to invest an additional $20 million to restore and revive the event center – also known to long-time locals as the “Ice Palace.”

Neighbors for the Las Vegas Country Club and other surrounding high-rises recently met virtually with County Commissioner Tick Segerblom over their concerns.

“Thousands of residents are going to be impacted by the noise. I mean, I’m a school teacher. I have to get up in the morning. It’s a big concern,” said neighbor Elliott Nilsson. “I’m concerned that the County Commission is trying to steamroll this without consulting the public.”

Other residents have told FOX5 their concerns: can County officials and local residents explore other options?

Noise ordinances would address various residents’ concerns, County officials have said.

Fans of EDC and live events have a growing interest in the future for Insomniac in Las Vegas– and the possibility of more live events for young adults in the area.

In September, the owner of the Composers Room at Commercial Center expressed excitement for more foot traffic and more live events. The Composers Room has a growing audience for matinees and regular weeknight shows.

“When we say we want to be that Vegas again, let’s bring the live entertainment that that Vegas wants to have,” Damian Costa told FOX5.

Insomniac and the County have not finalized their agreement, Segerblom said. A possible presentation and vote could occur in December, he tells FOX5.
