LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — If you’re in the market for a new job, criminals are more than willing to hire you for their latest scam.

It typically starts with a very attractive posting on reputable career sites like ZipRecruiter or LinkedIn. It claims to come from a respected company, offers excellent pay and benefits, and involves relatively light responsibilities. So you apply. Within days, a hiring manager calls you to set up an interview.

During the call, they’ll imply the job is yours, then send you a link to confirm your direct deposit information and speed up the hiring process. Unfortunately, this job doesn’t pass the background check, because it’s a scam! The job post and the site are both fake, and now your sensitive information is in the hands of cybercriminals.

To avoid this type of scam, be suspicious of postings offering unusually high pay. If a salary seems too good to be true, it probably is. Do not provide any company any sensitive information until you are certain both the employer and the job offer are legitimate. And, pay attention to the recruiters’ contact information. Bad actors often use phone numbers or email addresses not associated with the companies they claim to represent.
