LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — It may seem like a quick way to make some easy money, but the Federal Trade Commission warns that some online jobs are really just scams dressed up as opportunities.
It starts with a message on your phone, WhatsApp, or social media offering to pay you for doing simple online tasks. It sounds easy, and the message promises you’ll get paid fast. You’ll complete your assignments through an app or online platform and supposedly collect a commission with every click. And you’ll see your earnings grow with each completed task.
Initially, the scammers may actually send you a small portion of your earnings to earn your trust. But then, you’re told you’ll have to deposit some of your own money to collect the rest of your pay. Typically, they’ll ask for cryptocurrency or prepaid debit cards. However, even if you do pay, they won’t, and you’ll lose your time and your money.
To avoid this type of scam, ignore generic texts or social media messages about jobs. Legitimate employers will never contact you that way. Never pay anyone to get paid, or to get hired for a job. That’s a big red flag, and a sure sign an employment offer is really a scam. Don’t trust any company that wants you to pay you to give positive ratings or likes online. Reputable organizations do not do that.
