RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has announced his intention to create a Subcommittee on Nevada’s fuel supply chain.
Lombardo announced his intention to create the Subcommittee Thursday via the resolution for the Nevada Commission on Homeland Security. The committee will aim to strengthen the state’s fuel supply chain and reduce vulnerabilities to regional and national disruptions.
Lombardo says the state relies entirely on imported transportation fuels, primarily from the state of California, which he says leaves the Silver State vulnerable to refinery closures, market volatility, and infrastructure bottlenecks.
He also expressed concern that, with refineries in California scheduled to close in 2025 and 2026, Nevada could face fuel shortages and price spikes.
The committee will assess Nevada’s supply vulnerabilities, improve coordination with private partners, and help reinforce Nevada against any potential disruptions.
“Energy security is national security and that includes ensuring Nevadans have reliable access to the fuel that keeps our economy and communities running,” said Governor Joe Lombardo. “This Subcommittee will bring together state, industry, and federal partners to develop long-term strategies that strengthen our infrastructure, diversify supply routes, and protect Nevada’s future.”
If approved, the Fuel Resiliency Subcommittee will:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of Nevada’s current and projected fuel needs and vulnerabilities.
- Explore options to expand infrastructure, storage, and transportation capacity.
- Recommend policies, investments, and partnerships to enhance resilience and emergency response capabilities.
- Coordinate with federal and regional partners, including the Federal Permitting Improvement Steering Council (FPISC), the Department of Energy, and the Department of Transportation, to accelerate permitting and address multi-jurisdictional barriers to critical infrastructure projects.
The Subcommittee will deliver its findings and recommendations to Lombardo and to the Nevada Commission on Homeland Security in 2026.
