LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — An American flag mounted on a hill off Galleria, between Tuscany and Lake Las Vegas, has drawn concern from residents and at least one Vietnam veteran. Most of the flag’s red and white stripes are gone and the flag is barely clinging to the flagpole it’s attached to.
‘It definitely should be changed’
One person who stopped at the parking lot said the flag should be replaced. Fariborz Zojaji, who lives in nearby Lake Las Vegas and hikes to the flag, said the location itself holds appeal.
“That’s what makes you go, the flag itself. It’s pretty cool to get up there,” Zojaji said.
He said the flag’s condition has declined in recent months.
“It’s probably been like that for about three months now,” Zojaji said. “Last time I was up there, it was in good condition about four months ago. And before that, it was in perfect condition.”
Eighth grader, Vietnam veteran weigh in
An eighth-grade girl, who told FOX5 about the flag, also expressed concern, saying she worried veterans might feel bad seeing the flag in its current state.
Vietnam veteran Richard Crescitelli, SFC U.S. Army-Ret., served during the Tet Offensive in January 1968, viewed a photo of the flag.
“Oh, that’s very tattered,” Crescitelli said.
Crescitelli said 2,600 U.S. troops were killed during the Tet Offensive. He said he changes U.S. flags quarterly in the Lynbrook neighborhood near Jones and Farm.
Crescitelli said whoever placed the flag may no longer be able to maintain it.
“Perhaps they’re not able to take care of it anymore or not able to communicate to somebody else to please take care of it for them,” he said.
According to the U.S. Flag Code, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”
It is not known who placed the flag at the location.
