LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas Metro Police’s newest Area Command is expected to open by the beginning of August, Sheriff Kevin McMahill said Monday.

The Las Vegas Metro Police Department expects to receive the keys to the facility in late June or early July, McMahill told reporters during a press conference. The department says it will then equip the building before opening it.

The Southeast Area Command will initially move all personnel into the new facility while its current station undergoes repairs to pipes and air conditioning systems. Once those repairs are complete, the Southeast Area Command will return to its original location and the new building will become the Hollywood Area Command.

Community response

County Commissioner Tick Segerblom said residents frequently ask when the station will open.

“People are so proud that they’re finally having East Las Vegas having a police station,” Segerblom said.

The department cut the ribbon on the facility in March 2025. McMahill said the station has been needed for decades.

“In my 35 years of policing, we’ve dreamed about having a police station up here in East Las Vegas to provide police services, full police services to the people that live in this community,” McMahill said.

Focus on Charleston corridor

Segerblom said Charleston Boulevard currently serves as the dividing line between Northeast Area Command and Southeast Area Command. The new Hollywood Area Command will center on Charleston, with the district extending in both directions from the corridor.

McMahill said the station will allow officers to work closer to the neighborhoods they serve.

“The cops adopt those communities as their own,” McMahill said. “These neighborhoods are their homes.”

The sheriff also said his office is working with the county to address homelessness in the area.

“We are going to work to clean up Sunrise Manor and to make Sunrise Manor proud to have this police station in this area in command,” McMahill said.
