LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Gov. Joe Lombardo unveiled a publicly available interactive tool in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management Nevada to show federal lands that may be available across the state on Monday.

The tool is designed to bolster coordination, planning and information sharing about federal lands. Approximately 85% of Nevada’s total land area is owned by the federal government, much of it undeveloped.

Federal land availability in Clark County

Black outlined areas identified on the interactive mapping tool show BLM lands potentially available for disposal across Nevada. In Clark County, numerous areas are identified on the outskirts of the Las Vegas valley.

One plot of land identified on the new tool is about 380 acres near Desert Inn and Hollywood. The identified disposal type is listed as “sale.” The land is on the far east edge of the valley near Frenchman Mountain and is virtually untouched, though housing developments have been proposed nearby.

Housing crisis and land availability

Sen. Jacky Rosen argued for the need to release federal land for affordable housing last year, saying it could “tackle our housing crisis by… making appropriate federal land available for housing.”

A 2022 study from Applied Analysis found the valley will run out of land to build by 2032 at the pace of the valley’s population growing.

Sen. Mike Lee of Utah proposed an amendment to President Donald Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill last year that would have mandated sale of 2 to 3 million acres of land across the West back to the states or other entities to build more affordable homes. The amendment failed.

Lombardo said the new tool ensures communities, businesses and local governments have the information they need to plan for future development. The tool is available through a data sharing agreement between the governor’s office via the Nevada Division of Minerals and BLM Nevada.
