LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Postal workers in southwest Las Vegas are using June to remind pet owners to secure their dogs before the mail arrives.

The U.S. Postal Service says 11 letter carriers were bitten by dogs in Las Vegas last year.

City carrier Candace Smith said this month is their national dog bite prevention awareness campaign. She said they’re asking customers to keep pets put away when carriers come to the door, especially if a signature is needed or children are outside.

“Dogs are very territorial. As we all know, I have my own animals and they’re very protective of us and my kids especially,” Smith said. “So, we would like to remind our customers to please never encourage their children to come out and get the mail from us when their dogs are present. Because they might take that as a threat to their children and do what they’re supposed to do and protect them.”

Smith said carriers are trained to watch for “beware of dog” signs, food bowls and toys in yards. She said they jiggle their keys so dogs reveal themselves, and they carry repellent and use their mail satchels as a shield if a dog charges.
