LAS VEGAS (FOX5) —A drug-sniffing K-9 with the Mesquite Police Department has helped seize around 437 pounds of meth, marijuana and fentanyl stored in the department’s evidence building. This over about 18 months. But police say “Rogue” uncovered just under 300 pounds of meth in the last six months.
Some of the seized methamphetamine was found inside containers covered in mustard, vinegar and coffee grinds — an apparent attempt to mask the drug’s odor and throw off the dog’s scent. Rogue located the drugs regardless.

Mesquite police demonstrated Rogue’s capabilities by hiding a container with methamphetamine on a patrol car. Rogue circled the vehicle a couple times and then located the drugs. Rogue is then reward with a toy, which he likes to play tug of war with.
Cartels and convictions
“There’s not a lot of major crime here in Mesquite. We’ve been ranked the safest city in Nevada for quite a few years. This is major criminal activity. Some of these drugs, or even all of them, will be tied to Mexican cartels,” said Hughes.
Police believe the drugs seized by Rogue and Hughes were destined for Colorado and the Midwest. A second officer said each seizure carries broader consequences beyond Mesquite.
“Every time we take it off the street, we are hoping that we’ve either saved a life or helped some community or family down the line that would have been negatively affected by having this,” said Jaime Stout with the Mesquite Police Department.
What’s next for Rogue
Drug arrests connected to Rogue’s work have led to convictions, with some offenders receiving prison sentences of five to 15 years, police said.
With Rogue aging, police said they hope he can continue working for a couple more years before retiring. A second K-9 began working in June and is expected to continue the work Rogue has been doing.
