LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A rare toad species known as Woodhouse’s Toad has been recorded at the Springs Preserve for the first time since approximately 1962, according to a post from the preserve.

A trail camera captured a lone adult male calling in the Cienega area of the preserve. There have been no records of any toads at the site since the original springs ran dry around 1962.

Woodhouse’s Toads have displaced or hybridized with Arizona Toads in the Las Vegas Valley, completely replacing that species since about 1976, according to the Springs Preserve.

The Springs Preserve described the toad as a “possible early colonist.” No females have been recorded at the site to answer his call, the post stated.

The preserve noted the sighting marks the first recorded appearance of the species there in nearly 65 years.
