CARSON CITY, Nev. (KOLO) – Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar is calling a recent SCOTUS decision on mail in ballots “disheartening.”
The court issued the ruling on Monday, allowings new restrictions on mail in ballots to continue as the midterms near.
“The Supreme Court’s ruling is another attempt to attack states’ constitutional right to run elections and it’s disheartening to see the justices give this executive order the ability to move forward. This ruling does not address the constitutionality of the executive order and we look forward to continued legal fights to prove that states have the right to run elections as they determine,” said Secretary Aguilar. “The midterm election is less than 70 days away, and the President continues to spread lies about our elections and the security of mail ballots. It’s the voters who are getting hurt; not the politicians in Washington. While the administration creates confusion and undermines confidence in our elections, local election officials in Nevada are focused on delivering a safe, secure and accessible election in November.”
Aguilar says that the ruling complicates upcoming midterms, as state and local officials are already well into election preparations.
He says attempting to implement changes this close to an election creates confusion, places new burdens on election officials and could prevent eligible voters from receiving or casting mail ballots.
He says the state is now evaluating legal and operational measures, and that additional legal challenges are expected.
Aguilar says that at this time, Nevada’s election procedures have not changed and that Nevada’s election officials are continuing preparations under existing mail in ballot laws.
