LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A man carrying an AR-15 moved through a North Las Vegas neighborhood Sunday, banging on doors and opening fire before dying at a hospital after being taken into custody by police.
The incident occurred on Yellowhammer Place, near North Decatur Boulevard and the 215 freeway.
Surveillance video obtained from a homeowner shows the gunman banging on a door before shots are fired.
‘I’m just glad we weren’t home’
The homeowner, who did not want to be identified, said she was not home when the gunman banged on her door and fired shots from her front steps. She said she also has a 1-year-old child.
“I’m just glad we weren’t home at the time because I don’t know what we would have done,” she said.
She said a bullet traveled through a kitchen wall in her home. Damage to the front of the home remained visible after the incident.
“I don’t know if one of us maybe would have tried to answer the door,” she said. “I would like to assume if we heard gunshots we would run and go upstairs, but thankfully we were not there.”
Neighbor closes garage door as gunman approaches
Neighbor Ryan Adams said he was in his garage when he saw the gunman coming down the street.
“I happened to look up at my street and saw the shooter coming down the street holding the gun — middle of the day, it was hot, no shirt on, sweaty,” Adams said. “I wasn’t sure if he was playing with a squirt gun.”
Adams said it was only when the man got closer that he realized what he was carrying.
“It wasn’t until he got closer that I was like, oh yeah, that’s an AR — that he is armed with,” Adams said.
Adams said he closed his garage door to prevent the gunman from entering. He also filmed video from inside his home showing shots being fired from a neighboring property into his house.
“Family is shook up,” Adams said. “We will be processing it for a few days.”
Suspect dies after taken into custody
Police said the gunman resisted arrest and became unresponsive after being taken into custody. He was transported to a hospital, where he died.
Police said they believe the suspect was under the influence but did not specify what may have been in his system.
A North Las Vegas police officer injured a hand while taking the suspect into custody. No other injuries were reported.
North Las Vegas Police and the Clark County Coroner’s Office had not yet released the suspect’s name or a cause of death as of Monday. A request for that information remains pending.
