From 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Parkdale Recreation Center, residents picked up fruit or shade trees on a first-come, first-served basis.
Priority went to people living in zip codes hit hardest by urban heat — 89121, 89120, 89142, 89122, 89169 and 89119.
Commissioner Tick Segerblom said more trees mean more shade, cooler streets and lower energy bills over time.
Residents needed landscape irrigation to take a tree home. The event also included local vendors and free food.
