LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Longtime Las Vegas advocate Ruby Duncan has died. She was 93.

In a statement, North Las Vegas Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown called Duncan “a giant of advocacy and justice,” saying she worked tirelessly to improve the lives of working Nevadans. The mayor said Duncan’s impact is still felt across Southern Nevada through expanded help for women and children, along with added community resources in the Historic Westside.

Goynes-Brown also said Duncan’s legacy will live on for future generations through Ruby Duncan Elementary School in North Las Vegas. “Thank you, Ruby,” she wrote, adding condolences to Duncan’s family and gratitude for her example of standing up for others.

Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley also shared her reaction on X, saying she was “heartbroken” to learn of Duncan’s passing. Berkley said she had known and loved Duncan since she was a teenager and was honored to call her a friend.

“She helped make this community a better place to live for all of us,” Berkley wrote. “She fought for those who needed help. She will be greatly missed.”
