LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A Las Vegas man is facing DUI charges after he struck and killed a woman attempting to push her car off the road on Tuesday night.
According to an arrest report from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the driver was identified as 29-year-old Cody Hill. He is currently facing charges of DUI resulting in death, duties of driver when approaching a traffic incident, and expired registration.
On Tuesday, April 9, around 6:47 p.m., witnesses told investigators that a white 2018 KIA Soul had broken down in the leftmost lanes on West Ann Road and Tropic Mist Street. The owner of the KIA, who was identified in the report as Diana Ready, was observed standing to the left of the vehicle.
Witnesses say that several motorists stopped to assist Ready with her vehicle and move it off the road.
However, a black 2012 Hyundai Veloster (driven by Hill) was seen traveling westbound on Ann Road, approaching the disabled vehicle and the group attempting to move it. After failing to decrease his speed or move to the adjacent lane, the front-right of Hill’s Hyundai collided with the rear-left of the KIA.
Ready was also struck by the car, “projecting her into the air and onto the roadway,” according to the report. Hill then drove over Ready, before making a U-turn, attempting to drive over the raised center median, and coming to a stop along the south curb of Ann Road.
Bystanders ran to the aid of Hill and Ready. Those approaching Hill would later tell investigators that “a strong odor of alcohol” was coming from Hill, and that he was “not making clear conversation.” A “Buzz Ball alcoholic beverage” was also observed on the driver’s door near the door handle, according to the report. One witness also told investigators that she removed the key fob and turned off Hill’s vehicle to prevent him from fleeing the scene.
Investigators also noted that an off-duty Department of Corrections officer arrived at the scene and approached Hill’s vehicle, and also noticed an intense smell of alcohol coming from Hill. It was also noted that Hill was “uncooperative” with the officer, and was detained until LVMPD officers arrived.
Medical staff with the North Las Vegas Fire Department attempted life-saving measures on Ready, who would eventually die from injuries sustained in the crash.
Arriving LVMPD officers noted in the report that Hill had “bloodshot and watery” eyes, a “strong odor of alcohol” on his breath, an “unsteady” stance, and was seen “falling over” and “needed support.”
After failing a field sobriety test, Hill was taken into custody at 7:28 p.m. and was booked at Clark County Detention Center on DUI-related charges.
Court records indicate that Hill was released from custody following his initial appearance on Wednesday on a $150,000 bond and electronic monitoring.
He is due back in court for a status check on Monday, April 15.
