LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A judge set bail at $7,500 for Destiny Reyes, the 29-year-old woman accused of injuring a duck on the Las Vegas Strip

Reyes is charged with one count of animal cruelty, a felony, in connection with an incident prosecutors say happened June 9 near the Venetian Hotel & Casino.

A prosecutor told the court the case is “all on video,” describing footage from Strip surveillance cameras that allegedly shows Reyes taking a duckling from the Venetian pond and violently handling it.

The prosecutor said the video shows the duck being tossed back and forth, dropped onto the pavement, struck, and having its wings pulled. The state said the duck suffered an injury to one wing. Prosecutors also cited Reyes’ prior conviction for attempted battery causing substantial bodily harm as part of their argument for strict release conditions.

Defense counsel urged the court to consider Reyes’ ties to the Las Vegas community, noting she has no failures to appear and said her parents were in court and could provide housing while she looks for work. The defense asked the judge to release Reyes under high-level pretrial supervision instead of setting monetary bail.

The judge said the amount of video evidence made the case highly provable and raised concerns about Reyes’ stability and returning to court, citing statements that she had been “couch surfing” and information discussed in court about the earlier conviction. The judge ultimately set bail at $7,500 and ordered her under house arrest.

The judge also granted the state’s request that Reyes not have animals or be around animals.

Reyes’ preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 30.
