LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Mesquite police and animal control officers recovered 77 dogs from an RV on May 15 after the owner was cited for animal welfare violations.

Giustino Laudando was arrested on two separate occasions on warrants related to animal ordinance violations. Police and animal control officers responded to complaints regarding a local home housing an excessive number of dogs over the past several months.

Laudando was found to be in violation of Mesquite City animal ordinances and was issued multiple citations. He failed to comply with the cited violations.

Eviction and return

Laudando was evicted from his residence earlier this year. He indicated he would be leaving the state with the animals. Officers learned he remained in the area, residing on Bureau of Land Management property outside of city limits.

On May 15, Laudando returned to the city of Mesquite, where he was contacted by police and animal control officers and cited for violations related to animal welfare and city code compliance. Officers and animal control personnel located and recovered 77 dogs from Laudando’s RV.

Medical care needed

Many of the dogs require medical attention due to the conditions in which the animals were found. Several of the dogs were determined to be pregnant. As of May 18, one dog has given birth to four puppies, bringing the total number of animals in care to 81.

The Mesquite Animal Shelter is working to provide medical treatment, nutrition and safe housing for all rescued animals. The shelter is experiencing a strain on its physical and financial resources due to the high number of animals and the level of care required. Community donations would be appreciated as the shelter continues providing care for these animals.

The Mesquite Police Department and Animal Control remain committed to ensuring the safety, care and wellbeing of every animal in the community.
