LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – With the rise in popularity of e-bikes and e-scooters there are a lot of questions about safety.
Thursday night, Las Vegas Metro Police held an event to address those concerns and educate riders on rules including new laws that take effect next week during an event they call a “bike rodeo” at Trek Bicycle Las Vegas West.
“We unfortunately did have a fatality that was related to e-scooter use and when I saw that I wanted to create an event to help keep our community safe,” revealed Sgt. Brent Garcia with Metro’s Enterprise Area Command.
The Las Vegas Valley has seen groups riding in the streets and even running red lights, especially teens and young adults. E-scooters and e-bikes have been hit by vehicles and killed.
“We want to make sure that the children know what they are supposed to be doing and then we also advise their parents and make sure they are on the same page,” Garcia explained.
“Where the scooter or the bike is going like 65 mph, it is too fast and there’s little kids and everything on the bike trails,” shared Maria Thom who lives and rides her e-bike in Summerlin. Thom brought her kids out for the “bike rodeo” safety ride.
“If you’re a kid and you are on a regular pedal bike, certainly you don’t want to have someone buzz by you at 65 mph… Last commission meeting we unanimously passed a new ordinance banning e-motorcycles in our parks and on our trails and also put regulations on speed for e-bikes,” reported Clark County Commissioner Justin Jones. Jones hopes the new rules will make it safer for everyone.
“We are going to make sure that we are going to have really good signage in our parks and on our trails, so people understand what is the speed limit, what type of vehicle am I able to use,” Jones stated.
