LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The North Las Vegas Police Department will participate in a statewide Joining Forces campaign focused on speeding enforcement from July 1 through July 20, 2026.

During the enforcement period, officers will conduct high-visibility patrols targeting drivers who exceed posted speed limits or travel too fast for roadway, traffic, or weather conditions. The campaign aims to reduce preventable crashes, serious injuries, and fatalities caused by speeding.

National speeding data

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 11,288 people were killed in speeding-related crashes in 2024. Speeding was a contributing factor in 29% of all traffic fatalities nationwide that year.

Higher speeds reduce a driver’s ability to react to unexpected hazards and increase the severity of injuries when crashes occur, according to NHTSA.

What drivers should know

Speed limits are established to balance safety and traffic flow under ideal conditions. Traveling at or below the posted speed limit may still be unsafe during poor weather, heavy traffic, construction zones, or other hazardous road conditions.

“Speeding continues to be one of the leading factors in serious and fatal traffic collisions,” the North Las Vegas Police Department said. “This enforcement campaign is intended to encourage drivers to slow down, obey posted speed limits, and make safe decisions behind the wheel. A few extra minutes is never worth risking a life.”

Motorist reminders

The North Las Vegas Police Department encourages motorists to:

  • Obey posted speed limits
  • Slow down during poor weather, heavy traffic, school zones, and construction areas
  • Allow extra travel time rather than rushing to a destination
  • Leave a safe following distance between vehicles
  • Remember that higher speeds reduce reaction time and increase crash severity

Funding for the Joining Forces campaign is provided by a grant from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety.
