LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – While local rules for street vendors remain undefined, there has been a huge surge of roadside pop-up taco stands around the valley primarily open at night.

FOX5 asked one group that advocates for street food vendors why are we suddenly seeing pop-up roadside taco stands all over the valley? They aren’t sure, but will be hosting an informational meeting for them and all street food vendors in Nevada.

From tacos to tortas, there’s a wide variety of food and drinks offered at the roadside stands just like a restaurant, but right not they are not regulated like one. No permits have been issued by the health district, city, nor county because regulations for street food vendors in Nevada are still being decided. In June, the governor signed Senate Bill 92 requiring cities, counties and local health boards adopt regulations.

Tuesday, Make the Road Nevada will hold an informational event for street food vendors with the goal of giving them a timeline. Under the new state law, vendor licenses must start being given out by July. How vendors will be able to apply still remains unclear.

Wednesday morning, the City of Las Vegas will take up a bill that would add a new chapter to its city code. The ACLU of Nevada is in opposition saying it is too restrictive prohibiting sidewalk vending near public spaces including city parks, swimming pools, and community centers.

A lawsuit is currently pending in California based on a sidewalk vending ordinance that prohibits vending in the most pedestrian-friendly parts of Los Angeles. The ACLU warned if Las Vegas passes their bill, they should expect a similar legal challenge.

FOX5 reached out to Clark County, LVMPD, and the City of Henderson Friday afternoon about the pop-up taco stands to ask if these businesses are allowed or if they are violating current street vendor ordinances. We did not hear back.

The informational meeting held by “Make the Road Nevada” is open only to street food vendors. FOX5 will also be there.
