LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Nevada Department of Corrections (NDOC) said it is working to correct what it calls errors and misinformation released this week by Parole Pathways regarding deaths in its custody.

NDOC reported that from 2023 to the present, 206 offenders have died while in its custody. Of those deaths, 20 were ruled homicides. The department said the average prison population during that period was 10,380 offenders and that its mortality rate is below the state average, citing Nevada data.

So far in 2026, NDOC said there has been one recorded homicide in its facilities, occurring in February. The department also “vehemently” denied allegations that an offender was killed by officers last week.

NDOC said its mission is to keep offenders safe and treated humanely while helping them prepare to re-enter the community. The department said it has increased surveillance and changed staffing to limit how many offenders are out of their cells at once.

Officials also say it’s considering more ways to reduce violence, including efforts to stop contraband from coming in through the mail.

NDOC emphasized that Parole Pathways is not partnered with or affiliated with the Nevada Department of Corrections or the Nevada Division of Parole and Probation.
