LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Office of Community Engagement and more than 100 nonprofits, small businesses, and corporate partners are teaming up for a backpack giveaway at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Organizers are aiming to hand out 15,000 backpacks filled with school supplies. They hope to hand out enough to break a world record set in Dallas last year.

Officer Grant Okinaka of LVMPD said the event reflects the strength in community support.

“We serve the best community in the world… over a hundred nonprofits, small businesses, and corporations came together for this. Together, we’re all going to go and achieve this goal,” Okinaka said.

Organizers said they still need hundreds of volunteers each day to help pack and distribute backpacks. Registration information is available on the QR code here.
