LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A local developer has purchased the site for the former Skyvue Ferris wheel project, FOX5 has confirmed, and county documents show plans for a heart-shaped resort and “sky restaurant” held by the long-standing pillars.

The sale of the 11.8 acre site off Mandalay Bay Road and Las Vegas Boulevard finally closed on Monday for $70 million, the broker for the site tells FOX5. The sale to the local developer had been in the works for months, the broker said.

The Skyvue project planned for a Ferris wheel on the Strip, years before the competing High Roller project eventually debuted in 2014. Construction stalled in 2012, leaving the giant pillars left standing.

Documents filed April 6 with Clark County’s Planning department show proposals from a legal firm representing the project: an 874 room hotel.

“The 350-foot resort tower would appear heart shaped with a heart shaped LED display featuring an LED screen over a glass curtain wall providing a view of the Las Vegas Valley,” documents state.

“The proposal would create a unique experience along Las Vegas Boulevard South with a covered structure over a pedestrian plaza from Las Vegas Boulevard to the Resort Hotel tower that would be similar to the Fremont Street Experience.”

The project and developer plan to utilize the long-standing pillars: “the existing upright structures that were previously designed for a wheel will be repurposed to create a 265-foot sky restaurant venue,” documents state.

Renderings tied to an application number for the project show the layout of a resort and various amenities, and a “sky tower.”

Some locals have mixed opinions on progress after the site has stayed stagnant for years.

“Good luck. If you can do anything with that, it would be a miracle,” one passerby named Don tells FOX5.

“They’re thinking about building a new NBA stadium right down the street. I think with that and that, everything’s going to go well together,” local Brian tells FOX5.

FOX5 reached out to the developer for comment, including the law firm representing the proposal and application.
