LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Less than a year after the Athletics broke ground on their new stadium, steel is rising and the area is taking shape on the Las Vegas Strip.

During a media tour Friday, dozens of workers were seen under the Vegas heat helping transform what was once the Tropicana Hotel into the future home of Major League Baseball in Las Vegas. The Tropicana came down in October 2024.

Stadium bowl takes shape

All of the bowl steel has been completed in about a three-month period, according to construction officials.

A’s team President Marc Badain said crews are expected to begin installing the concrete sections that will form the stadium seating next week.

“Over my left shoulder, about six of those wooden stakes in, you can see a green cylinder. That is home plate,” Badain said. “So you can see the proximity of the entire bowl to home plate, the verticality of the building and how we stacked all the decks, how close all the seats are going to be to home plate.”

Roof installation underway

The first of five massive roof trusses was put in place days ago, something that took about six months of planning, Badain said.

“And then once we get the roof panels up, you’ll start to see the workforce go from about 650 craft workers to probably more than double that, as we do both exterior and interior work about a year from now,” he said.

Players toured the site Tuesday.

“The players were here on Tuesday. So we had a big chunk of them come in and tour their sites and take pictures, and I think they were pretty blown away by their new home,” Badain said.

Tropicana tribute planned

Badain said pieces of Las Vegas history will not be forgotten at the new stadium.

“Obviously we’re on the site of the old Tropicana, so there’ll be some tribute to that location. And then we’re working on some branding ideas,” he said.

Project leaders say construction remains on schedule and on budget with some portions even running ahead of schedule. The stadium remains on track to open before the start of the 2028 season, when the A’s are expected to play for the first time in Vegas. In the meantime, the team will continue playing its home games in Sacramento.
