LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is joining forces with law enforcement agencies across Nevada to crack down on distracted driving in a high-visibility traffic safety campaign.
The “Joining Forces” initiative, which begins Friday, Aug. 7, and runs through Aug. 31, 2026, will deploy extra officers to patrol Nevada roadways. The goal of the campaign is to educate the public and strictly enforce traffic laws to reduce injuries and fatalities.
According to federal safety data, more than 3,300 people were killed nationwide in traffic crashes involving distracted drivers in 2022. Authorities warn that distractions go beyond cellphones, including interacting with passengers, eating, or any activity that diverts a driver’s attention from the road.

“Every time you choose to get behind the wheel, lives are in your hands,” representatives with the Zero Fatalities Nevada program said in a statement.
Road safety officials emphasize that sending or reading a text takes a driver’s eyes off the road for an average of five seconds. At a speed of 55 mph, that brief distraction is equivalent to driving the length of an entire football field with eyes closed.
The Nevada Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety provides federal funding to local police agencies to facilitate the increased patrols.
