“It just gives a chance for us to get in front of the young kids in our valley and really talk about issues that are important, safety, online safety, traffic safety, e-bike safety,” said Chief Reggie Rader of the Henderson Police Department.

The summit brought together the Clark County School District police force, school social workers and local law enforcement to teach students how to protect themselves.

Crime prevention and safety awareness

Henderson CSI officers discussed how to solve a crime and partnered with a canine officer for a demonstration.

“The number one priority for me as a police chief is keeping our young ones safe or vulnerable population,” Rader said.

Rader emphasized how students need to report concerns to adults.

“Whether it be bullying, making a threat, potentially bringing a weapon or even narcotics to school, being able to have the courage and the awareness to mention that to an adult so we can get involved,” he said.

Traffic safety highlighted

Traffic and driving safety was a prominent topic at the summit. Officers referenced a November incident when an 11-year-old was shot and killed in a road rage incident.

Officers taught students to be aware of their surroundings and the unpredictable behavior of drivers.

A presentation called “Zero Team Fatalities” walked students through how to make good choices as both a driver and a pedestrian.
