LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Addiction is not picky. Anyone can fall victim to it.
If someone can pull themselves away from that world and get back on track, it means they have a story to share.
“I‘m six months sober, and I’m closer to my family and I’m closer to the community,” Micaela Gurrea said. “I was given a second chance at life, and I think that if we go out into the community and reach out and make a difference in one person at least, you can save their lives.”
Gurrea was just one of hundreds of people with their own comeback stories to share Saturday night. So many people are pushing through their struggles to earn a second chance at life.
“I am 727 days sober. I’m about to hit my two years,” Jimmy DePew said.
“Addiction is one of the hardest things to crawl out of, and there are people here who have done it and they want to help people.”
The reason everyone is together? Narcan at Night.
It’s an annual event to spread awareness about drug addiction and an important tool that can help fight it. In 2023, 3,000 Narcan kits were put together for 40 volunteers to distribute to the community. For 2025’s event, more than 550 people came together to give out 10,000 Narcan kits across the Las Vegas Valley.
“It’s saving thousands and thousands of lives. I see it every day. I carry it with me everywhere I go. It’s an amazing product,” Jason Bybee said.
Bybee was an addict for over 30 years, now approaching two years of sobriety. He got emotional talking to FOX5 about his journey to get clean and the people close to him he’s lost because of addiction.
“There’s a big part of me that’s here for my boy, Mike Knowles. Lifelong friends. He passed away from an overdose a year ago. That’s a big part of why I’m here,” Bybee said.
A sea of purple shirts made their way down Fremont Street, one of 15 teams across the valley, talking to anyone who would listen about the life-saving impacts of Narcan.
“I’ve Narcan’d people driving down the side of the road, and I pulled over and got out and did my Narcan thing with my training I got from US vets and also from Shine A Light and saved the guy’s life,” DePew said. “You never know whose life you might save. It could be yours.”
