LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas police are honoring the legacy of a local child who died of cancer, offering comfort to kids in crisis one bear hug at a time.

Police officials say Tyler Anthony Ballew was known for his courage while battling cancer and for the kindness he showed everyone around him. A loyal friend and devoted big brother to Ashley and Natalie, Tyler was recently honored as the City of Las Vegas Citizen of the Month, his family says.

Tyler attended Staton Elementary and Sig Rogich Middle School in Summerlin, and loved sports, with family members noting he always showed up to practice with a big smile and an upbeat spirit, officials add.

After the young boys death, his family found a way to keep his caring heart close to the community. Tyler’s stuffed animals that once comforted him as a child, are now being carried in Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department patrol cars.

When officers meet a child who is scared, hurt, or going through a difficult moment, they can hand over one of Tyler’s teddy bears for comfort.

His family says Tyler’s legacy continues in a simple but powerful way: helping others feel safe—one bear hug at a time.
